Block Grants for Snap Benefits Would Hurt Food Security

I commend the Post-Gazette for its coverage of the devastating impact of block granting on federal programs providing critical assistance to our most vulnerable neighbors ("Advocates Fear Block Grant Idea Could Ruin Medicaid," Jan. 30).

While the focus of the article was Medicaid, those of us who work to ensure that all our neighbors have enough to eat are also extremely concerned with proposals to drastically reduce the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly Food Stamp) benefits. The radical restructuring of SNAP through block granting would hurt our fellow Pennsylvanians relying on this vital nutritional assistance, most of whom are children, seniors, persons with disabilities and working adults. The essence of the program - expanding when economic or natural disaster strikes and contracting when times are good - would be replaced with an approach that would erode support regardless of local circumstances. …
