Privatizing the Pwsa Is Not the Solution

We need an overhaul of PWSA but not one that privatizes the system. Investor-owned utilities typically charge more for water service than government utilities. This is not the road to take. We need to ensure that every person has regular access to clean water at an affordable price. A public-utility can do this and be held accountable by the public. We get no such assurances from a private entity.

PWSA can work if we ensure it has exceptional management and world-class technical oversight. The mayor needs to oversee the immediate hiring of better managers and retain key employees. PWSA must release data about lead in the water to the public. Transparency is critical.

We should then create a research and technical advisory council of community leaders; professionals and scholars from the sciences (in addition to engineering); and experts who specialize in equitable public water systems. …
