Seniors to Be Permitted to Work during School Day

A new program at Thomas Jefferson High School will allow seniors who have sufficient credits to work at paid jobs during the school day, beginning next school year.

The work study program, approved unanimously by the West Jefferson Hills school board, is for seniors who do not plan to attend college or are undecided about what to do after high school, school officials said.

The idea emerged from students' requests to leave school early for work instead of taking electives they feel they do not need.

"It is a great opportunity for kids to really leave high school with marketable skill sets and go directly into the workforce," said Christopher Sefcheck, high school principal and acting curriculum director.

"It gives them a sense of what the workforce is really like," he said. "The main purpose is to get kids prepared for careers and not just to have a job and get out of school. …
