HACKENSACK -- St. Joseph cannot ask for anything better than Chauncey Hawkins at the foul line in the fourth quarter.

The Green Knights fought off Pascack Hills in Sunday's Bergen County Jamboree boys basketball quarterfinals, 57-49, with their All- North Jersey senior guard sealing the victory with free throws.

Hawkins scored 13 of his team-high 20 points in the fourth, shooting 7-for-8 from the foul line, to earn defending champion St. Joseph a return trip to Fairleigh Dickinson's Rothman Center for Sunday night's semifinal against rival Don Bosco.

"Drawing fouls and getting to the line is an easy way to score," Hawkins said. "You catch your breath, and you take an uncontested shot."

Hawkins finished 10-for-12 from the line to help No. 3 St. Joseph survive No. 6 Pascack Hills and a game-high 26 points by another 1,000-point career scorer, senior guard Nick Guillemain.

"Chauncey is an excellent free-throw shooter and he's an excellent leader," St. Joseph coach Mike Doherty said. "So down the stretch, you want the ball in his hands, and he did an excellent job getting to the free-throw line."

Hawkins does an excellent job getting to the foul line because he is adept at making a little bump by a defender look like a hard shove, by wrenching his body backward or to the side while still maintaining his balance. He made two free throws with 30 seconds left for a 53-49 lead, and his steal and layup produced the final score. Senior forward Isaac Hippolyte added 14 points and senior forward Joseph Radi 12 for No. 3 St. Joseph (19-4).

Pascack Hills played well, just as it did in last year's semifinal loss to bigger, stronger St. Joseph. Guillemain scored 16 in the first half to keep the Cowboys (16-3) within 24-20. Their last lead was 42-40 on a drive by senior Michael Murphy that he turned into a three-point play with 5:45 left in the game. …
