1890 The Carnegie Library in Allegheny, the first Carnegie Free Library, was opened to the public after being dedicated by President Benjamin Harrison.

1934 Plans were announced for a $350,000 juvenile court and detention home in Oakland.

1983 Elsie Hillman was named "Woman of the Year" by the Pittsburgh chapter of Vector International.

2016 Justice Antonin Scalia, the influential conservative and most provocative member of the Supreme Court, was found dead at a private residence in the Big Bend area of West Texas; he was 79.
