Russians rally against, for cathedral takeover

Thousands of people in Russia's second-largest city held competing demonstrations Sunday for and against the return of the renowned St. Isaac's Cathedral to the Russian Orthodox Church. The cathedral, one of St. Petersburg's top tourist destinations, was seized by the state after the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution and became a museum. The city announced last month that it would be returned to church control.

Opponents say they fear that under the church, tours will focus on the cathedral's religious aspects and give short shrift to its architectural and cultural importance.

Turkey claims advance in Syria * Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his troops and allied Syrian fighters had reached the heart of the Islamic State stronghold of al-Bab in northern Syria and would march on the extremists' de facto capital, Raqqa. But the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which has a network of activists inside Syria, said Turkish troops had yet to enter the town's center.

March in Mexico City protests Trump * About 20,000 people staged a march through Mexico's capital Sunday demanding respect for their country and its migrants in the face of perceived hostility from the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. Many marchers carried Mexican flags and dressed in white as a sign of unity and to signal the nonpolitical nature of the march. One of the banners read: "Gracias, Trump, for unifying Mexico!"
