Gas Prices Steady, but Spring Rise Likely

Gas prices in the Bradenton-Sarasota-Venice market are down about a penny from a week ago, but a spring price hike is still likely to be in the cards, experts say.

A gallon of regular was selling for $2.245 in the area, flat with the previous day and down from $2.256 a week ago.

At this time in January, prices were about 14 cents higher. A gallon of regular had been selling for $1.705 at this time in 2016, according to AAA data.

"Low demand is keeping downward pressure on gasoline prices," AAA spokesman Josh Carrasco said. "OPEC's cuts are being offset by increases in domestic oil production, high gasoline and oil inventories and a drop in gasoline demand. Gas prices should remain steady in the near-term before taking their seasonal upswing as we head into the spring."
