The Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority was looking for a major leak Wednesday after water levels fell at two reservoirs.

By Wednesday evening, PWSA determined the rupture was somewhere in the Lanpher reservoir service area that reaches about 45,000 residents north of the Allegheny River. But crews had yet to identify an exact location for the leak, which was releasing an estimated 10,000 gallons per minute, PWSA said.

That represents about 20 percent of PWSA's total average daily water production, spokesman Will Pickering said.

"There is currently no risk to water quality or supply," PWSA said in a statement late Wednesday. The authority said it would be "working through the night to identify the exact location of the leak. …
