Firefighter, Police Officer Honored for Saving Woman

A Bridgeville firefighter and police officer who saved a woman from a burning car before it exploded were honored Tuesday at the Bridgeville council meeting.

Assistant Fire Chief Ray Costain and Officer Matt Haley rescued the 78-year-old woman Dec. 6 from her car after it plunged over the hillside at the end of Ramsey Street. The car was wedged against a tree above railroad tracks and had caught on fire.

"Assistant Fire Chief Costain, who noticed smoke coming from the hillside, observed the car on fire and called 911. Officer Haley responded to the call, and the elderly female was pulled from the car minutes before the car exploded and was completely engulfed in flames," Bridgeville police Chief Chad King said.

Officer Haley sliced his hand when he broke the car's window, and Assistant Chief Costain hurt his knee during the rescue. …
