Upprize Finalists Try to Solve Social Problems

Ten finalists have been selected for UpPrize, a competition that challenges organizations to come up with technologies and solutions to help the needy in the Pittsburgh region.

All 10 will receive a $10,000 grant and will compete for final awards of up to $300,000.

A total 175 organizations entered UpPrize in October to solve one of two challenges: developing technology to improve how nonprofits deliver services; and developing products or services to increase healthy food access for underserved people and communities.

The finalists in the impactful technology category are:

* BlastPoint, which provides technology to access big data;

* Community Data Roundtable, which developed a portal for parents to access their children's medical information;

* Expii Inc., which developed a free, educational website focused on math and science learning;

* HiberSense, which developed a system to monitor thermostats for energy savings;

* Rubitection, which developed a device to help medical providers prevent and manage bedsores. …
