Costs Rise Ahead of Demolition | City Expects Crews to Start Razing Old Building This Month

SARASOTA -- Costs for the new Venice library are going up $354,000 as crews prepare to take the old library down.

The Sarasota County Commission approved the increases Wednesday above the almost $830,000 in contracts it already set aside for the new library last year.

The extra cash will go toward the scope of pre-construction planning and design of the new library building and the demolition of the previous Venice library building on the city's cultural campus on Nokomis Avenue, according to county documents.

Demolition of the old building is expected to begin this month and be completed in April, county project manager Kim Humphrey said.

Once the building is down, crews can begin further soil testing and examination of the site where county and city leaders want the new library rebuilt, Humphrey said. …
