Wabash Tunnel to Remain Open to All Vehicles to Relieve Traffic

After years of operating only for high-occupancy vehicles or with a waiver to allow all vehicles on a limited basis, the Wabash Tunnel on the South Side is now permanently open as a rush-hour shortcut for all vehicles.

The Port Authority, which has owned and operated the tunnel since 2004, announced this week it has reached agreement with federal transportation officials to use the tunnel for all vehicles. The tunnel, which links West Carson Street at Station Square with Route 51, is open to inbound traffic from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. and outbound traffic from 3 to 11 p.m.

It is closed overnight.

The Port Authority acquired the former railroad tunnel to use it for buses and other high-occupancy vehicles, meaning two or more passengers, but buses no longer use it. During nearly three years of PennDOT construction ending last year on West Carson Street, the authority obtained a waiver from the Federal Transit Administration to allow vehicles with one occupant to use the tunnel. …
