One day in 1960, I sat in a public speaking class at McKeesport Senior High School taught by Helen Malseed, an extraordinary teacher, once named the country's best national speech coach. She came in and asked us if we knew what had happened. The day before, the Soviet Union had displayed the wreckage of a U.S. spy plane the Soviets had shot down. President Dwight Eisenhower had repeatedly denied such overflights were occurring. "This is the first time in my lifetime," she said, "that a president has been caught lying to the American people." Never one to pass up a "teachable moment," she was warning us.
