Etna Entices a Skate Fest Shows a City Neighbor on the Move

Officials in Etna get high marks for ingenuity.

They're putting a portable rink right on Butler Street for the inaugural Etna Winter Street Ice Skate, to be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday. The event will overlap with another outdoor skating spectacle, the 8 p.m. Stadium Series game between the Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers at Heinz Field.

The borough's economic development leaders came up with the idea, partly to encourage residents to lead more active lifestyles. But it's also a great marketing concept for Etna, which is across the Allegheny River from Lawrenceville and, like Millvale, experiencing spinoff effects from the city neighborhood's development boom. The free skate party will help to raise Etna's profile- a spirit of whimsy only adds to the borough's charms and fixes the town more firmly in the public mind. …
