Cresskill Seeks Grant to Fund Merritt Field Expansion

CRESSKILL -- The borough is applying for a state Green Acres grant to help fund asbestos cleanup and demolition of a house as part of an effort to expand Merritt Field and add new recreational facilities.

The house at 222 Piermont Road was bought by the borough through a $500,000 bond in November. The Bergen County freeholders had awarded the borough $300,000 in open space funds to help pay off the bond.

The borough is now looking to pay off the balance with a $276,515 matching grant under the Green Acres program. If the grant is approved, Mayor Benedict Romeo anticipates starting work on the house in June.

"I think this is a fair number that we have a good chance at getting," said borough engineer Paul Azzolina, of Azzolina & Feury Engineering, at a council meeting earlier this month.

Once the asbestos is taken care of and the home is demolished, the land would become part of Merritt Field, which sits between Piermont Road and Merritt Memorial Elementary School, Romeo said. …
