Patients who have had surgery in the last two years to remove defective Stryker Orthopedics hip replacements are now eligible for settlements of $300,000 or more, according to Stryker.

The announcement this week stems from a 2012 recall of the hip- replacement parts by Stryker and its Mahwah-based subsidiary, Howmedica Osteonic. That recall was followed by patients' lawsuits, which were settled in November 2014.

The original settlement offered $300,000 and up to patients who had had surgery to remove the implants as of November 2014. This week's announcement expands the settlement to patients who have had the surgery up to Dec.19 of this year.

"This extension opens the door for many hundreds of people who suffered from these faulty devices to seek justice," said Ellen Relkin, an attorney with New York-based law firm Weitz & Luxenberg, which represented patients. …
