Media Views: Extensive Cards Spring Training Broadcast Coverage Begins Saturday

Article excerpt

February isn't even over, but the Cardinals' spring training schedule starts rolling early this year as exhibition play in Florida opens Saturday. And broadcasts of the team's Grapefruit League action will be extensive, as there are no days in the more than a month of practice games that no live coverage is planned.

In fact, the only contest in the 32-game Florida schedule not to be carried is a split-squad game Monday against the Red Sox. But the Cards' other outing that day, against Washington, will be available via online audio streaming.

And more than half of the games are to be televised live, including all contests on Saturdays and Sundays.

Fox Sports Midwest is set to show 15 games, starting with contests against Miami at 12:05 p.m. this weekend, and will have nine of the team's 10 Saturday-Sunday games. (The other will be on MLB Network). Those who receive FSM also will have mobile access to the spring telecasts, via the Fox Sports GO app and the website. It's the first time Grapefruit League telecasts will be available that way, as Cards streaming began in the regular season last year.

Regular Fox Sports Midwest Cardinals play-by-play announcer Dan McLaughlin will have the call for 13 of the FSM productions, with Minnesota's Dick Bremer handling the duties on March 15 and 16 Fox Sports Midwest and Fox Sports North have joint telecasts then. FSM's Rick Horton will be the commentator for those games.

There are two other telecasts that FSM shares with the Cards' opponent's TV crew, both against the Marlins. McLaughlin is to handle the play-by play of those and is to be joined by analysts from Fox Sports Florida Todd Hollandsworth on March 12 and former Cardinal Preston Wilson on March 26.

Analysts Al Hrabosky and Jim Edmonds, regulars in FSM's rotation in the booth, as well as Brad Thompson are to serve as commentators on Fox Sports Midwest's other spring training telecasts. Thompson normally appears as an occasional commentator on pregame/postgame shows, but will be in the booth for one game March 11, against the Braves. …
