North Jersey Catholics needn't nix corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick's Day, despite the feast falling on a Friday during Lent, when the faithful are compelled to abstain from meat.

The bishops of the Archdiocese of Newark and the Diocese of Paterson- which comprise all North Jersey counties - have issued dispensations allowing their flocks to eat meat during the feast of Ireland's patron saint on March 17.

Both bishops suggested ways to compensate for the corned beef. "I remind Catholics who avail themselves of this dispensation that the [Roman Catholic] Church highly encourages you to substitute some other act of penance, such as special prayer, acts of piety or works of charity, on March 17," said Newark Archbishop Joseph Tobin in a statement. …
