Penndot to Involve Communities Earlier in Road and Bridge Work

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is starting a new program regarding road and bridge projects that would involve local communities earlier in the process.

Under PennDOT Connects, announced last week, residents and officials will be able to help the department develop plans before they get to the design or funding stage, PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards said. Ms. Richards said the new procedure will be "a heavy lift for us" but that it will avoid a recent situation where the design for a new bridge was more than 50 percent done before the department knew the community wanted to add sidewalks.

"That's exactly what we want to avoid," Ms. Richards said. "Now we will be taking a look at what they want even before a design or concept is developed."
