There's a reason the Academy Awards ceremony is considered the grand finale of awards season. It's the night that Hollywood's who's who pull out all of the stops on style.

From gaudy to glamorous, we saw it all. Here's a recap of some of the highs and lows from the red carpet:

Showstoppers: Gold and red were among the night's trending hues. Ruth Negga and Viola Davis radiated in fiery reds by Valentino and Armani Prive, respectively. Emma Stone (Givenchy) and Nicole Kidman (Armani Prive) turned heads in gold embellished beauties. Janelle Monae's black Elie Saab ballgown also deserves a nod. With a sheer bodice, high collar and lots of details, it was a true example of fashion as art.

Statement makers: Several stars used the red carpet as a chance to spotlight a cause or passion project. Emma Roberts showed her support for the Red Carpet Green Dress movement, which promotes ethical fashion, in vintage Armani Prive that oozed old Hollywood glamour (yet left little to the imagination up top). Olivia Culpo encouraged people to get involved with the global water crisis in a custom Marchesa gown with pieces of Stella Artois' chalices. In partnership with Water.org, someone in a developing country would be provided clean water for five years for each chalice sold. Other celebs wore small blue ribbons to promote the work of the American Civil Liberties Union.

Best bling: Jessica Biel delivered gilded gladiator goddess in a spectacularly sequined Kaufmanfranco gown that shimmered on her slender frame. Even more eye candy came courtesy of a spiked Tiffany & Co. bib-style necklace. Charlize Theron, in metallic Dior haute couture, got the diamond treatment with jaw-dropping chandelier earrings by Chopard. Pharrell Williams proved that guys can have fun with accessories, too, with a bold lapel pin and a stack of beaded necklaces slung around his neck from Chanel. …
