Devils Blow a Pair of 2-Goal Leads, Fall in Ot

Article excerpt

NEWARK - This version of the Devils likely ended their time together with a second straight overtime heartbreaker.

"We didn't give up a whole lot the first two periods," frustrated goalie Cory Schneider said. "We do a lot of good things. We should've won. That's the story of the week."

The Devils twice could not hold a two-goal lead and lost, 4-3, to the Canadiens on Monday night, the team's final game before the NHL trade deadline and general manager Ray Shero likely to be a seller given the long-shot odds of making the playoffs.

"I don't think anyone thought about it like that," left wing Taylor Hall said. "You go do your job with whoever you're beside. This is a business, as I've learned. We're just employees. We can be traded. We can be cut. The trade deadline is not going to affect how we play."

The Devils (25-25-12), in an 0-2-2 skid and seven points behind the Maple Leafs for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference, also lost to the Rangers, 4-3, in overtime on Saturday after failing to protect a one-goal lead in the third period.

This time, Alex Galchenyuk scored the overtime, power-play winner at 2:54 as the Canadiens (34-21-8) skating four on three after defenseman Damon Severson hooked Nathan Beaulieu. Max Pacioretty, with his second goal, tied the game with 51.8 seconds remaining as the Canadiens skated six on five with goalie Al Montoya off for an extra skater.

"For all of our guys, to get into the playoffs, to be a playoff team, those are the situations we have to be able to find a way to win," Devils coach John Hynes said. "We have to have a certain attention to detail. There's hard plays that need to be made. It's not that we're not trying. We're just not executing well enough in those situations."

Travis Zajac and Kyle Palmieri each had a goal and an assist for the Devils and Schneider made 29 saves. …
