DANCE

For the third year, students and staff at the Sarasota Cuban Ballet School will travel to Havana, Cuba in April to attend an international gathering of ballet students at the country's national academy, the Fernando Alonso Ballet School. The students will attend classes from April 10 to April 19, taught by instructors from the Cuban school, which is under the direction of Ramona de Saa.

Seven of the 19 students making the trip also will compete in the 23rd annual International Ballet Schools competition, including four from Sarasota -- Harold Mendez, 15, and Olivia Ratner, 15, both students at Sarasota High School, and Lauren Teyke, 16 and Edlyn Wernicoff, 15, who attend Pine View High School.

In 2014, SCBS founder Ariel Serrano, a Cuban native and former student of De Saa's, and his wife, co-founder Wilmian Hernandez, took their first group of students to Havana for the event. …
