Calabrese Stays Tough in States

Article excerpt

FRANKLIN LAKES - Everything that makes Ramapo such a formidable team was on display.

Tough defense. Clutch three-pointers. And Emily Calabrese's toughness in the paint.

Calabrese scored 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, while Olivia Kraebel drained a pair of key second-quarter triples as fourth-seeded Ramapo defeated No. 13 Wayne Valley, 59-33, in the first round of the North 1, Group 3 tournament on Tuesday.

The Raiders faced some initial tentativeness, but they took control once that faded away.

"Truthfully we were just a little tight," coach Sandy Gordon said. "State game, you don't make a big deal about it but you know if you don't show up and play - it's survive and advance. I think we came just out a little tentative and just had to get into our flow."

Ramapo led, 12-8, after the first quarter, but Nikki Butler drained a three about 20 seconds into the second.

That ignited a 15-5 run for the Green Raiders, during which Kraebel hit back-to-back threes.

Kraebel finished with nine points. Tori Muller added 11 with one three.

Ramapo led 32-17 at halftime, with Calabrese scoring 14 of her points before the break.

"[Calabrese] does so much," Gordon said. "You know she's good for usually a double-double every night. And the nice thing is that she's been so unselfish this year and she's trusting her teammates, that she knows she's going to be doubled and tripled, but she's going to kick it out."

Lexi Piotrowski led Wayne Valley with nine points, while Stephanie LaGreca scored eight.
