President Donald Trump has labeled the media an "enemy of the American people." Similarly, playwright Henrik Ibsen portrays his protagonist, Dr. Stockmann, as "an enemy of the people." However, the circumstances differ. When Dr. Stockmann informs the town that its prosperous mineral springs are contaminated, the angry townspeople reject this revelation. Furthermore, the local newspaper suppresses the facts, making Dr. Stockmann, a whistleblower, the enemy of the people. He not only faces the tyranny of the majority but also the absence of an independent press.

So far, we have benefited from a free, independent press. U.S. reporters have risked lives and careers to communicate well-investigated facts. In the 1970s, Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward discovered the truth that Richard Nixon used the office of the presidency to cover up a criminal act (breaking into the Watergate offices of the Democratic National Committee). …
