Homicide Defendant Gets Bond in Carrick Shooting

A Carrick man accused of killing another from inside an Uber car this month will be allowed pretrial release pending trial.

Derek Vasos, 37, was granted release to electronic home monitoring on Friday by Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Jeffrey A. Manning.

Mr. Vasos' defense attorney, Phil DiLucente, argued that his client was acting in self-defense when he killed Donald Ketter Jr., 28, on Feb. 5 on a street in Carrick.

According to investigators, Mr. Vasos ordered an Uber to pick him up outside the Carrick Lit Club early that morning, and when he got in the car, it began to drive off.

However, witnesses told police Mr. Ketter was walking in the middle of Copperfield Avenue, blocking the road. Mr. Vasos leaned over from the passenger side seat of the Uber and beeped its horn, and Mr. Ketter moved out of the way. …
