Steelers put tag on Bell, give Brown big contract

The Pittsburgh Steelers locked up deals Monday with two key cogs of their offense, placing the exclusive rights franchise tag on running back Le'Veon Bell and signing receiver Antonio Brown to a contract extension. The tag gives the club time to work out a long-term deal with Bell, who could have become a free agent next month. The 25-year-old led the NFL in average yards from scrimmage last year and became the first player in NFL history to average at least 100 yards rushing and 50 yards receiving per game. The Steelers have until July 15 to reach an agreement with Bell on a contract. If not, he will make the average salary of the top five running backs in the league in 2017.

Meanwhile, the team and Brown agreed to a contract that the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported is for five years and $72.7 million, and with bonuses is worth more than $15 million annually.

The first year of Brown's new deal replaces the final year of his previous one, meaning that he's under contract through the 2021 season. Brown, 28, has averaged 1,575 receiving yards and 120 catches in each of the last four seasons. (From news services)

Also, the Los Angeles Chargers placed the non-exclusive tag on linebacker Melvin Ingram and the Panthers did so with defensive tackle Kawann Short. (AP)
