Bergen Catholic's Offense Breaks the Ice

Corey Sowinski got the cheers started when he buried a rebound for the first Bergen Catholic goal.

Nicolas Arcaroli kept the team's student section on its feet, scoring a mere 1:10 later.

By the time Steven Ayers cashed in on a 5-on-3 power play with 8:44 to go in the first period, eight different Crusaders had made their way onto the score sheet against one of the Big North's strongest hockey teams.

Bergen Catholic's 6-0 victory over Glen Rock on Sunday night in the Ice Vault Holiday Classic opener represented perhaps its best offensive showing in the past season-plus. It also extended a four-game unbeaten streak (3-0-1) that has followed an 0-4 start.

From the Crusaders' perspective, the win was most welcomed in that it showcased what is possible when they are at full strength.

"We're getting healthy," coach Brian Montverdi said, listing some of the senior leaders that his team missed early on. "Jack Shannon, Cade MacBeth -- Pierre [LaMonica] was out; he had strep throat for a little while."

LaMonica was Bergen Catholic's top scorer last winter, when an underclass-heavy squad averaged just 1.3 goals per game. Even in the first four outings of this season, goals were tough to come by against elite Gordon Conference competition.

Since a 3-2 loss to powerhouse Delbarton on Dec. 6, the Crusaders have outscored opponents, 18-4. Shannon and sophomore Tommy Kleinman netted their first goals of the year Friday at Iona Prep (N.Y.), a 6-1 win, and MacBeth tallied his first two points with assists versus Glen Rock.

Ayers, a senior defenseman, found Sunday to be a fitting stage for his first goal of the season, being a resident of Glen Rock.

"The kids were pretty fired up, because a lot of them actually play travel [hockey] with or against Glen Rock kids, out of the Ice House with the Avalanche," Montverdi said. …
