Sources Say Man Shot by Paterson Cop Had Knife

PATERSON -- A man who was shot and wounded by a Paterson police officer Thursday morning allegedly was wielding a knife, according to law enforcement sources.

The wounded man did not appear to have suffered life-threatening injuries, law enforcement sources said. The incident took place outside at Main and Levine streets about 9:30 a.m., officials said.

Two patrol officers were present during the shooting and one of them fired a service weapon, sources said. Authorities have not released the names of the officers or of the man who was wounded. Authorities also have not said how many bullets struck the man.

Lt. Mason Maher, president of the union that represents ranking police officers in Paterson, said the officers were in danger and responded to the threat to protect themselves. …
