Trump's actions more important than wordsPresident Trump gave a reasonable address to Congress the other night and said, "The time for trivial fights is behind us." He also called for a merit-based immigration system. All good.

The problem is, he was reading carefully chosen words off a teleprompter. We've seen this act before. The real test will be when he speaks (and tweets) off-the-cuff. That's the real Trump, and we'll soon see if he is ready to forgo trivial fights and reach out to heal the country.

Remember, this is the same man who in the previous few weeks repeatedly bashed the media and judiciary, started Twitter fights with the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, implemented an inhuman immigration roundup, insulted an African-American journalist and, well, the list is too long to recite in full.

The point is that when he has talked about bringing the country together in the past, it quickly became apparent that what he meant was that we should all capitulate to him.

To date, the president has shown he is much more interested in building walls than bridges. It's time to lead. Let's see if he is up to the task.

Attorney General Sessions must resign

I am outraged that U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions lied under oath during his Senate confirmation to cover up his contact with the Russian government.

And I am getting scared, too. Why are some members of the Trump administration lying about contact with Russia? What are they trying to cover up, and how much damage is being done to our country in the meantime? Sessions must resign, and an independent prosecutor must be appointed immediately to investigate.

Come together and replace Obamacare

I find it fascinating to hear Democrats like Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., say there isn't a single point articulated by President Donald Trump of value. Wasn't it the Democrats who approved Obamacare without a single Republican vote, thus forcing it down the throats of all Americans?

And what makes any senator or congressman, Democrat or Republican, think they can sit in judgment about what is, or is not, good health care for the American people when most of them have their own fully paid health-care coverage.

Obamacare is on life support. You would think that faced with this threat, Democrats and Republicans would come together to help solve a major problem facing all Americans. Instead, they continue their constant bickering and disrespect for the president of our nation. What kind of example is this for our young people? This is not freedom of speech. It is feckless, reckless and irresponsible behavior.

Tribute may have been too calculated

Regarding "President's tribute to Navy SEAL was sincere" (Other Views, March 2):

Hugh Hewitt's column of rationalization reminded me of so many of Donald Trump supporters' constant refrains. …
