State Rig Count Begins 1986 on Positive Note with Jump

HOUSTON - Oklahoma's count of active drilling rigs began 1986 on a positive note, increasing 4.1 percent to 276 for the week ended Jan. 3, according to figures released Monday by Hughes Tool Co.

The rig count during the first week of the new year was up from 265 registered during the last week in 1985.

The latest week's count was 7.6 percent under the 299 rigs working during the same week last year. That week was the high point for the state rig count in 1985.

The most recent week was 26.2 percent below the 374 rigs working during the same week in 1984 and 26.9 percent under 1983's 378.

Nationwide, the count increased less than 1 percent to 1,915 from 1,898 the previous week. However, that was down 25 percent from the 2,556 reported during the week a year ago.

Compared to the 2,724 rigs operating across the country during the week in 1984, the current week is down 29. …
