Connolly's Men's Store in downtown Oklahoma City, is leaving the retail business.

However, talk of the landmark store being closed is still premature, he said, although he will be having what he calls a "strong" sale in mid March.

"It's a mixture of circumstances in the economy and my own choice to leave the business," he said. "Obviously, I've done strong thinking about this. I had the choice of putting lots of money in it and staying another 20 years or closing the store."

Projections on someone else buying the store are flat, Connolly said, adding that he didn't want to get embroiled in another long discussion with a potential buyer.

"I feel we need to take some action," he said. "I'm not rejecting the idea if someone wants to buy our store.

"It has been a fabulous experience. My father (the late Joseph F. Connolly) created a tremendous retailing idea in its place and time. However, times change. The atmosphere today is not what it was."

For 50 years, Connolly's had a marriage with Oxxford Clothing.

"That won't continue," he said. "We've had all our eggs in one basket - thousand-dollar suits.
