Central Expressway Bids to Be Opened This Month
The portion of the Central Expressway open for bids includes seven-tenths of a mile of bridge construction, surfacing and drainage from Reno Ave. north to NE 6th St., plus a half mile of roadway near NE 6th St.
According to Verne O. Bradley, transportation department director, $21.5 million of the $23.9 million come from federal funds, while the remaining $2.39 million will be state funds.
Moreover, $15.8 million of the federal monies are discretionary funds, according to Bradley. These are funds which the federal government originally had granted to other states for highway projectsbut later took back because those states where unable to procede with their projects on schedule.
Announcement that the discretionary funds were available was made last week by Oklahoma Congressman Mickey Edwards.
Bradley said one of the conditions of the use of discretionary funds is that construction must begin right away, so he anticipated work on this phase of the Central Expressway may begin as early asApril, following the commission's approval of a contracting firm which will bid on the project.
When the Central Expressway project was first announced, it was stated the entire project would be completed by 1989. …
