An outdated, ugly necktie that has been buried in the corner of the closet for several years could be worth $100 to the owner if it is tacky enough to win first prize in a contest sponsored by Mr. Buck Menswear of Oklahoma City.

The "Second Annual Tacky Tie Trade-In" is a marketing ploy used by the men's clothing store, but owner Dan Johnston said the contest was so much fun last year, they decided to try it again.

Starting on March 1, Mr. Buck began accepting tacky ties as a trade in for a new tie at a discounted price. Each ugly tie is automatically entered in Oklahoma City's Ugliest Tie Contest. The winnerwill receive a $100 gift certificate.

Last year, Johnston said the store boosted March sales 25 percent over the same month the previous year.

If identifying what type of necktie would be appropriate for the contest, Johnston's description includes ties as "wide as your belly and in colors that can't be found in nature. …
