Norman-Based Calligraphy Magazine Entering Second Year

Article excerpt

A Norman-based publishing firm is starting its second year in the production of Calligraphy Idea Exchange, the only magazine i n the world designed exclusively for calligraphers, who pursue the art of fancy handwriting.

Calligraphy Idea Exchange Inc. was purchased by Karyn Gilman, president and managing editor of the magazine, in June 1985 from Executive Color Press. She worked as a consultant to the publication from November 1984 until she made the acquisition.

The investment was under $50,000, Gilman said, but she would not disclose the exact amount.

Currently, the number of subscriptions is about 3,000 internationally, with another 1,000 single copy sales in book and art stores.

Even though subscriptions hit a peak of more than 4,000 in 1983, Gilman said only one issue was produced in 1984. By December 1984, the circulation had dropped to about 1,500 to 1,800.

The editorial viewpoint of the magazine had narrowed, focusing mainly on new trends in the art of calligraphy at the expense of traditional approaches, Gilman said.

Upon taking control of the magazine, Gilman retained free-lance writers with expertise in calligraphy from various regions of the world - from New York to Australia.

"We're working on long range plan," said Gilman. In a marketing effort, she is offering special discounts to advertisers and sending promotional copies to members of the press.

Also, Gilman is making special offers to libraries in which a coupon can be completed for complimentary copies. She is also sending complimentary issues of the magazine to art departments at universities throughout country and calligraphy societies.

Student subscriptions are $27 for one year, while citizens in the U.S. pay $32 a year, Canadians are charged $42 and $52 is charge in all other foreign countries.

Gilman said about 200 of the total subscriptions originated from abroad.

All together, 11 issues of the magazine have made the final stages of production. …
