Article excerpt

The insurance industry in Oklahoma is encouraging holiday revelers to appoint a designated driver and is urging restaurants and bars to provide free non-alcoholic drinks to that person, according to Jerry Johns, president of Southwestern Insurance Information Service Inc.

"Our organization has provided over 6,000 free attractive lapel stickers to restaurants, bars and hotels in Oklahoma which state `I'm a Designated Driver' and the international sign discouraging drunk driving identifying to liquor servers the person who is to receive the free non-alcoholic beverages," Johns said.

Many liquor servers in Oklahoma will be cooperating in sponsoring this effort to reduce the large number of alcohol-related traffic accidents during the time just prior to Christmas and through Jan. 1, he said. Over 30,000 stickers have been requested by restaurants, bars and hotels in Texas, he said.

"If this program is as popular in Oklahoma as we expect it to be," he noted, "people will be seeing a lot of `I'm A Designated Driver' lapel stickers around."

The stickers are available at the Southwestern Insurance Information Service offices, 1330 Classen Blvd. . .
