U.S., Oklahoma Active Rig Counts Up for Week

HOUSTON - Both the United States and Oklahoma posted increases in the number of rotary drilling rigs operating during the week ended March 20, according to the International Association of Drilling Contractors, based in Houston.

The Oklahoma active rig count, which has been up for two consecutive weeks, increased 8.8 percent to 135 rigs from the previous week's 124 active rigs, and to its highest level since the week ended Jan. 16, when the rig count was 136.

The same week in 1986 recorded 166 rigs operating in the state, 18.6 percent more than operate currently, while the comparable week in 1985 recorded 259 active rigs, 47.8 percent more.

The U.S. active rig count rose 3 percent, to 784 rigs, up from the previous week's 761 rigs. The increase for the week came after the nationwide rig count had been lower for three consecutive weeks.
