New Manufacturing Process to Strengthen Magnetic Peripherals

A new manufacturing process should strengthen the position of Magnetic Peripherals Inc. of Oklahoma City, the small disk division of Control Data Products Group of Minneapolis, officials have announced.

Magnetic Peripherals, which manufactures computer disk drives, will begin in the fourth quarter of 1987 to manufacture the printed wiring assemblies for the drives at its Oklahoma City facilities.

Until now, assemblies have been built under contract with three other companies around the United States, according to Art Wadleigh, director of new product development.

Quad Systems Corp. of Hasham, Penn., a surface mount technology equipment manufacturer, will supply the assembly system for the plant.

Surface mount technology refers to a new process of mounting electronics used on a circuit assembly.

"In this process, electronics that are on a circuit board are soldered to the board surface," Wadleigh said, "where in the past technology, the components had wire leads, stuck through the circuit assembly and soldered on the back."

The move to manufacture the assemblies locally is the initial step of a high-volume manufacturing strategy for the manufacturing operations of Control Data, Wadleigh said.

"It is a corporate-driven strategy for all Control Data products to evolve into high volume strategy," he said, noting two distinct advantages:

- "By manufacturing the cards at the place the drive is manufactured, our engineers have a live assembly line to prove out their product - to de-bug it without it being done by an outside vendor. That's one of the biggest savings.

"This is the utopia of just-in-time delivery," Wadleigh said. Just-in-time delivery amounts to having supplies for manufacturing on hand as near to the time they are needed as possible, saving storage expenses. …
