Adams Chevrolet in Norman Sold / Expansion Planned

Article excerpt

Adams Chevrolet, operated for 14 years by dealer-operator Max Adams at 2424 W. Main in Norman, has been sold and reopened as Larry Spencer Chevrolet Inc.

The new dealership, which was approved Tuesday by the Oklahoma Motor Vehicle Division, will be operated by Larry Spencer as dealer-operator. Financial investors include Robert W. Moore of Bob Moore Cadillac in Oklahoma City, and Tim O'Neill, a Council Bluffs, Iowa, auto dealer, Moore said.

Spencer served five years as general manager of O'Neill's auto dealership in Council Bluffs.

Moore, who said he also backed the dealership when Adams operated it, bought out the interest of Adams, who retired in Norman. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

The 65 employees currently employed at the dealership will eventually grow to 100, Spencer said.

The facility, amounting to about 35,000 square feet of buildings on seven acres, will under go continuing renovation, Spencer said, with a price for remodeling not yet determined.

"We opened a detail shop," Spencer said. "And we reopened the used car building that was closed and bought a lot of inventory for it."

Spencer voiced optimism about sales at the Norman dealership, despite news of General Motors Corp. sales declines.

"Chevrolet is still a good product," he said. "We just have to make the people aware of it and give them a fair deal, and then stand behind the product.

"Our 1988 models are going to be some of the best ever. A lot of people look at GM overall as being down. Buick and Cadillac (also GM divisions) have had a little tougher time. But Chevrolet is the (back bone) of this auto business, and they are not going to take a back seat to anybody for very long.

"We hope to have a long-lasting relationship with this community, and get involved and support it, and hope in turn they'll support us."

The dealership was among 27 applicants seeking licenses Tuesday from the Oklahoma Motor Vehicle Commission, 10 of which were in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area.
