Thomas Concrete Opens 'Remote' Plant in Little Rock

The company opened a remote plant for the production of concrete double tees in Little Rock and has landed a $3.3 million contract for a parking garage there.

"We went after that job after we made the decision to place the remote plant there," he said. "That plant opened two weeks ago and we are now doing an evaluation of costs and how we do on this application.

"There is the possibility of us opening other plants like this in the future. We will look at opportunities as the work arises."

About half the concrete components for the garage in Little Rock will be manufactured in Oklahoma City and hauled by company trucks to the construction site. Double tees for the project will be manufactured there.

Using sophisticated manufacturing in Oklahoma City, along with remote manufacturing, permits the company to be competitive in out-of-state markets, Thomas said.

"By developing remote facilities in out-of-state areas," he said, "we will be able to keep the Oklahoma City plant busy and productive, keep more jobs (here).

"The whole purpose of this (the remote plant) was to utilize the people and overhead in Oklahoma City to get more work. The objective is to keep the technology and efficiency we have in our Oklahoma City plant intact as much as possible during this period of slow activity in the construction industry.

"I feel we have achieved this objective," he said.

Oklahoma City employment will remain about the same during the life of this contract, but the number of employees at the Little Rock plant will fluctuate, Thomas said.

The company employs 185 people here and will employ from 20 to 40 people in Little Rock. …
