Expanding Communication, Teamwork Top Lyles' Goals

Establishing more open communication and greater teamwork among entities involved in economic development locally will be goals of new Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce President Lloyd J. "Jimmy" Lyles Jr., who began work Monday.

Lyles takes over the chamber's top staff position from Clyde Ingle, who served as interim president for nine months following the Sept. 1 resignation of Edward H. Cook, who resigned to return to private business.

Before coming to Oklahoma City, Lyles was president of the Corpus Christi, Texas, Chamber of Commerce for nine years.

Other objectives listed by Lyles during an interview Monday included:

- Setting high yet attainable goals for the chamber's staff.

- Formulating a plan of action and a marketing strategy for the chamber.

The first priority, Lyles said, will be to establish a plan of action for the chamber's staff. He equated the process to a corporation with a product to sell.

"We need to look at our assets and our liabilities," he said. "We need to determine what we want to sell, and how we want to package it.

"Our stockholders are our members, and we will report to them what we're doing. We're no different than a corporation."

Although Lyles said he was still becoming familiar with Oklahoma City, he did emphasize the city's potential for development with the health sciences complex, its central location for transportation and distribution and its relatively low cost of living.

Lyles did not propose any major shake-ups or changes in direction for the chamber, but instead said he would like to find out what direction the chamber board and local leaders want to take and then proceed in that direction. …
