Hansen Optimistic Answer to Avoid Air Force Furloughs Will Be Found

Optimism in finding a solution to avoid furloughs of 15,000 employees at Tinker Air Force Base was expressed Monday by Gen. Alfred G. Hansen, commander of the U.S. Air Force Logistics Command, which includes the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center at Tinker.

However, until money is received to fund the payroll shortage, Hansen stressed that he could not guarantee there would be no furloughs of civilian employees working on the air force base.

Tinker employees currently are threatened with a four to eight day furlough scheduled to begin Aug. 1.

The Air Force Logistics Command, based at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, originally proposed a 10-day furlough of all its 82,500 civilian workers at nine locations worldwide because of a $69 million funding shortfall in its operation and maintenance budget.

On Friday, the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee approved an increase in the Air Force's civilian pay reserve account by $69 million. …
