Sales Tax Collections Fall for Second Straight Month

Sales tax collections for the Oklahoma City metropolitan area were down for the second consecutive month in February and were the lowest for any month since February 1987.

Area sales tax collections for the month totaled $10.4 million, down from $10.69 million in February 1988 and the lowest monthly collections since $9.6 million was collected in February 1987.

Collections for the first two months of 1989 totaled $21.5 million, down 2.1 percent from $21.07 million for the first two months of 1988, according to a report from the Oklahoma Tax Commission on the April disbursement of city sales tax collections from business in February.

Sales tax collections for the metropolitan area had been up for eight consecutive months compared to the same month of the previous year until the declines in January and February.

The report indicates that the falling collections for the area were part of a statewide trend.

- Collections for corporate Oklahoma City in February totaled $5.7 million, down 1.4 percent from $5.8 million in February 1988. Collections for Oklahoma City in February were the lowest since February 1987.

Collections in Oklahoma City had been up for seven of the last eight months. For the first two months of 1989, collections for Oklahoma City totaled $11.6 million, up 0.4 percent from $11.59 million for the first two months of 1988.

- Statewide collections for February totaled $32.28 million, down 2.7 percent from $33.18 million in February 1988. Collections for the state were down for two consecutive months after increasing for 12 straight months.

For the first two months of 1989, collections for the state totaled $21.07 million, down 2.1 percent from $21.5 million for the first two months of 1988.

- Collections for business in Tulsa in February totaled $7.66 million, down 0.3 percent from $7.68 million in February 1988. Collections in Tulsa have been down for two consecutive months after being up for seven consecutive months. …
