Community Block Grants Approved by City Council

Article excerpt

Council approved the city manager's recommendations Tuesday for $5.88 million in Community Development Block Grants for the fiscal year beginning July 1.

Discussion of the recommendations centered on the allocation of $205,768 for Second Century Redevelopment Corp. and the lack of an allocation for administration for the Harrison-Walnut Redevelopment Corp.

Second Century will take over the activities of the Oklahoma City Urban Renewal Authority in the fiscal year beginning July 1 because funding will no longer be available for the urban renewal authority.

The budget for the urban renewal authority for the year ending June 30 was $1.1 million, said Childers. The budget submitted for the fiscal year beginning July 1 was $801,000, said Childers.

Reductions of $372,000 were made possible by eliminating seven positions and moving into a building the authority owns instead of paying $53,000 to lease office space. Now the budget is about $400,000 for the fiscal year.

The city received requests for $10.59 million from 12 applicants. The allocations reflect the city council's priorities of downtown redevelopment, economic development and neighborhood revitalization.

This year the city has $4.29 million in new funds and $1.59 million in reprogrammed funds that were not spent last year.

Administrative costs can account for up to 20 percent of the available funds. This year:

- Metropolitan Fair Housing will receive $82,745 for educational services.

- The Hispanic Cultural Center will receive $34,597 for job development and placement, a job fair and coordination with a neighborhood association.

- Community Development Block Grant administration will receive $535,490 which includes $48,891 for administration and staffing of the Human Rights Commission. …
