Textbook Publisher to Close City Operations
Local operations of the textbook publisher which has become a division of the Macmillan-McGraw-Hill School Publishing Co. will be moved to three states by Dec. 31.
All employees, said to number "less than 100, probably between 80 and 85," will be offered a transfer along with the work, according to Anita Kopek, general manager and editorial director of the Macmillan-McGraw-Hill School Division, 1200 NW 63rd St.
"We don't have specific numbers (on how many will transfer)," she said. "We just announced this to employees last week and we've spent this week discussing it, giving them their options. But I'm surprised and pleased at the number who have expressed an interest in transferring."
Employees who choose not to transfer will be offered assistance through job out-placement services, she said.
Although end of Oklahoma City operations has been set for Dec. 31, the close-down will be done in phases with work and employees transferred at appropriate times. One person already has transferred, Kopek said.
Operations to be transferred include:
- Editorial, production, marketing and advertising departments, as well as product development from ninth through 12th grades, to Mission Hills, Calif.
- Customer service, order entry and management information systems to De Soto, Texas.
- Product development for kindergarten through eighth grades to New York City.
"Obviously this can't be done all at one time, so the transfer of operations will take place as it's needed," Kopek said. "We had to establish an end-date for operations, so we just selected Dec. 31 as that date.
"The editorial and production departments will be the last to move."
First units to leave probably will be the customer service/order entry group and the management information systems group, she said.
Relocation and consolidation was caused by an excess of capacity when McGraw-Hill Inc. and Macmillan Inc., two major publishing companies in New York, created in May a joint venture for school textbook publishing. …
