Gaylord Independent TV Station Offers Hour of News DALLAS - An independent television station that has been hitting network affiliates hard with its lineup of comedy reruns opposite their newscasts now intends to challenge their prime-time lineups with an hourlong local newscast of its own. The new 7 p.m. newscast on weeknights may begin as soon as August on KTVT-TV (Channel 11), according to James R. Terrell of Dallas-based Gaylord Broadcasting Co., which owns the station.

Gaylord Broadcasting is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Oklahoma Publishing Co., which is based in Oklahoma City and publishes The Daily Oklahoman.

Terrell said the station's lineup of ``Charles in Charge,'' ``Cheers,'' ``Cosby,'' and ``Night Court'' from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m will serve as a powerful lead-in to the independent station's news show.

``Our early evening situation comedies are our highest-rated programming,'' Terrell said. ``We're No. 2 in the market on most nights.''
