Action Deferred on Request by Tulsa for Extra Race Days

The Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission deferred action on the Tulsa State/County fairs' request for additional 1990 race days Thursday until the April 19 special hearing on the reconsideration of 1990 county fair race dates.

The Tulsa County Public Facility Authority asked the commission last month if the Tulsa State and Tulsa County fairs could absorb the 10 pari-mutuel days lost when the Lincoln County Fair cancelled its 10-day 1990 season scheduled for July 28 through Aug. 12.

The authority, which holds the licenses for both the state and county fairs, asked that nine of the days be allocated to the county fair and the remaining day go to the state fair. It also asked that should the days be granted, that the Tulsa County meet, scheduled for Sept. 8-15, be backed up to Lincoln County's time slot. The current 13-day Tulsa State Fair is scheduled for Sept. 16-30. Both race meets are at Fair Meadows At Tulsa racetrack which is on the Tulsa state/county fair grounds.

About 100 people attended Thursday's public hearing on the authority's request for additional days, including representatives of Remington Park and Blue Ribbon Downs, who oppose any additional days for the Tulsa fairs.

"Whether or not we make these 10 days available to any applicant (track) ought to be considered in conjunction with the motions to reconsider the decisions that were made back in August of last year," said Commissioner James Kirk, who made the motion to defer action on the Tulsa authority's request for additional days. "It has been the policy of the commission to look at the allocation of all days (from all tracks) together. To remain consistent, we need to look at whether or not we are going to allocate these 10 days to somebody else, if so to whom, in conjunction with the motions to reconsider, because all of those issues are intertwined. …
