Seasonal job increases carried total employment in Oklahoma to 1.17 million in April, the best result for that month since 1984 and the fourth best April since 1939.

State non-farm wage and salary employment increased by 16,400 in April 1989 and 4,100 from 1.16 million in March, the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission reported Wednesday.

"The increase was largely seasonal in nature," said W.J. Bowman, senior analyst, "but reflected the continuing upturn in state employment."

Five of the eight non-farm wage and salary industry divisions combined to produce the advance from March, while six were up from April 1989.

Wholesale and retail trade division employed 280,300 in April, up 3,000 from March and 5,700 from the previous year.

- Wholesale trade employment totaled 61,900, down 100 from March, but up 800 from April 1989.

- Retail trade sector accounted for 218,400 jobs, adding 3,100 jobs from March and 4,900 from April 1989.

April employment in the finance/insurance/real estate division totaled 57,100, up 2,100 from March but down 400 from the previous year.

Of that, banking and other depository institutions reported almost identical job growth from both periods, adding 2,300 positions from March and 2,400 from April 1989. Employment with nondepository credit institutions and insurance carriers was flat.

The construction division employed 36,000 in April, 800 more than in March and 1,100 more than the same month of 1989.

Employment in the transportation/public utilities division totaled 65,900, up 300 from March and 1,400 from April 1989.

The services division employed 262,600 in April, down 700 from March but up 6,100 from April 1989.

- Hotels and other lodging places employed 10,600, up 100 from March but down 900 from 1989.

- Personnel services accounted for 12,100 jobs, adding 800 from March and 100 from April 1989 levels. …
