Morris Cerullo May Purchase Ptl

Article excerpt

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A California-based evangelist may be on the verge of wrecking a deal between Tulsa evangelist Oral Roberts and the bankruptcy trustee for the defunct PTL ministry.

Roberts has a contract to buy PTL's television network for $6 million unless someone else agrees to buy all the assets as a package deal.

That someone else may be Morris Cerullo, a newspaper reported Wednesday.

The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer quoted unidentified sources as saying Cerullo, 58, has offered $52 million for PTL's remaining assets, including the satellite TV network and the Heritage USA Christian retreat.

Cerullo is an Assemblies of God pastor who heads the San Diego-based Worldwide Evangelism Inc.

A woman who answered the phone and said she was the receptionist at Cerullo's organization said he was out of town and could not be reached for comment.

PTL bankruptcy trustee Dennis Shedd declined to comment, although he confirmed he is negotiating with a ``major party.''

In 1978, while PTL was first announcing plans to build Heritage USA, Cerullo unveiled his own plans for a $100 million ``world outreach center'' in San Diego, but it never came about.

Cerullo's organization also has branches in Britain, Can ada, Israel and Zimbabwe.

Shedd is scheduled to ask U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Thurmond Bishop on Thursday to approve the contract with Roberts. But if he accepts the other offer he is negotiating, Shedd said he will recommend throwing out the Roberts deal.

``These negotiations have to be concluded by Thursday, because I expect the network to be sold on Thursday, barring some agreement,'' he said.

Officials at Roberts' Tulsa ministry were not available for comment Wednesday. …
