Planners Outline Wiley Post Airport $2 Million Update

Wiley Post Airport is under consideration for more than $2 million in improvements, to begin this summer with a $260,000 renovation of the terminal and restaurant areas.

"We're not talking about a plush restaurant by any means," said Jim Scott, Ward 5 City Councilman and chairman of the Oklahoma City Airport Trust. "We're thinking of a place where people can come and sit down - for the airport's fixed-base operators, and for people who are waiting for a plane to arrive."

Other improvements planned for Wiley Post Airport, which is nearing 50 years of age, include a renovation of the building leased by the Federal Aviation Administration, estimated at $860,000, and construction of a new entrance to the airport, estimated at $960,000.

The FAA building is "in the planning stage, and subject to change," Scott said. "We want to get as much input on it as we can before we get too far."

The new entrance is unfunded and is third in line. It would include 90-degree turn access from N. Rockwell Ave., and would give Wiley Post "an identifiable, main entrance," said George B. Lewis, vice president for architecture at HTB Inc.

HTB has been retained by the airport trust to develop plans for Wiley Post. Lewis, who addressed a meeting of the Oklahoma City Aviation Committee Monday, said the projects would include extensive landscaping and other aesthetic enhancements.

"There is quite a bit of emphasis on landscaping around the terminal and FAA building," Scott said. "I think it will be something we can all be proud of once it is finished."

"We need to spend some revenues on improvements out there (at Wiley Post), to help the existing businesses," Scott said. …
