Fowler Seeks Dealership for Hyundai in Norman

After a five-month absence, Hyundai will again have a presence in Norman, if approved by the Oklahoma Motor Vehicle Commission.

Interstate Hyundai, 617 N. Interstate Dr., owned by Bill Fowler and his son Mike Fowler, has applied for a license to sell the Korean-made compact and sub-compact. The commission is expected to decide upon that application, along with 18 others, during its regular monthly meeting today.

Also under consideration will be an application from Ford Motor Co. to purchase 100 percent of the stock of Southwest Ford, SW 59th St. and S. Pennsylvania Ave., now owned by Ted Gummerson. Roger Williams, now general manager of the dealership, is expected to retain his position.

Hyundai has not been sold in Norman since Dub Richardson Hyundai, 551 N. Interstate Dr., closed in early January.

Interstate Hyundai will occupy the site which formerly housed Fowler Subaru-Isuzu and later Interstate Used Cars, both owned by the Fowlers.

The Fowlers also own Fowler Toyota-Jeep-Eagle, 955 N. Interstate Dr..

Volume of the new dealership is anticipated at 500 new cars and 500 used cars per year, Bill Fowler said.

"We have been selling about 500 used cars a year there since we closed the Isuzu-Subaru dealership," he said. "What we'll do now is pick up the new car sales."

Employment will increase from 12 to 19, he said. …
